Kicking goals for the environment!

Fair Game Australia and Game On Recycling are kicking goals for the environment by partnering to collect unwanted sporting equipment waste in Western Australia to divert items entering landfill.

It is well known how important sport is for the mental, physical and social health of our communities. Aussie culture thrives on sport with over 2.5 million Australians participating in sporting activities each year. But our athletic passions come with a cost to the environment. It is estimated that over 12 million sporting balls end up in landfill each year! Fair Game Australia and Game on Recycling have come together with an innovative approach to increase access to the positive effects of sport whilst reducing the impact of sport on the environment.

Game on Recycling is a nationwide pilot program funded through the Australian New Zealand Recycling Platform (ANZRP), Wilson Sports Co, and the Federal Government’s National Product Stewardship Investment Fund to establish a national recycling scheme for sports equipment.

Game On Recycling provides a second life to sporting products, helping to reduce reliance on virgin materials and simultaneously improving the environmental credentials of sporting goods. This national collection and logistics service is delivered through participating retailers, schools, charities, tennis and other sports clubs, and local council.

Fair Game Australia delivers unique health and fitness programs and pre-loved sports equipment to remote and under-serviced Western Australian communities. By supporting these communities, Fair Game aims to remove barriers to participation in sport and fitness activities while having a positive social and environmental impact.

In 2021 Fair Game re-distributed over 10,000 pieces of pre-loved sporting equipment. In this new collaboration, Fair Game will aim to double the amount of sporting equipment they currently collect each year and increase their network of collection bins across Western Australia. Fair Game will sort the pre-loved equipment that can
be given a 2nd life in the community and channel the equipment that is no longer suitable for use to the Game On Recycling processing facility.

Through the Game On Recycling and Fair Game Australia partnership, diverting sports equipment (including tennis balls, basketballs, footballs, netballs and soccer balls) from landfill to the manufacturing sector provides that closed-loop waste management element missing in the sports community.

Speaking about this partnership, ANZRP CEO Warren Overton said, “we pride ourselves on playing an active role in establishing sustainable outcomes. Recycling thousands of tonnes of end-of-life sports goods is a boon for the environment. To partner with Fair Game Australia and diverting their waste from landfill and creating new products via
recycling is a tremendous initiative.”

Fair Game CEO, Nicki Bardwell, ‘we have been collecting and redistributing preloved sporting equipment for over 10 years and have seen the amazing impact that it can have on individuals and communities. We are thrilled to be able to team up with Game On Recycling to provide an end of life solution when equipment is no longer fit for us.”
